High Bickington Community shop is a grocery shop staffed and run by volunteers.  It is set up as a Limited Company and is registered as a “Community Benefit Society” under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014.

In a Community Benefit Society the rule is one member, one vote.  To become a member of the Society a member must purchase at least one ‘Community Share’ in the Society.  However, unlike ordinary company shares, no matter how large a shareholding a member has, they have an equal voice when electing the Management Committee and voting on other matters at the AGM.  These share also cannot be traded on the open market.  The only way of recovering their value is to apply to the management committee.

The shop is managed by a management committee of seven members, including the chairman, treasurer and the secretary.  The shop also has a paid part-time manager who manages the shop’s day-to-day activities and reports to the management committee.

The shop is registered with Companies House like any other business.  The details are given below.
